The towns and villages of the canton of Erstein are still marked by the remnants of an often distant past. Their history is revived by research carried out by a handful of enthusiasts. Fabien Baumann, the historian, returns to that of the double fortification of Benfeld. The second, with its bastions, inspired the famous military engineer and architect, Sebastian Le Prestre de Vauban.
