Powell breaks national high school record

Mercer Island High School junior Owen Powell broke a 21-year-old national high school record in the 1,000-meter race on April 20 at the Oregon Relays. Powell notched a time of 2:23.22 —breaking Bobby Curtis’ mark of 2:24.79 in 2003 — at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field in Eugene. Photo courtesy of the Mercer Island School District
